00:00 Drum solo establishes the tempo.
00:07 Ensemble with muted brass enter with a fragmented type of theme interspersed with light drum fills.
01:08 Lower instruments enter with a legato theme punctuated by the muted brass ensemble. This theme will appear throughout most of the composition.
01:40 Notice a third melodic line in the trombones.
01:45 A gradual shift from the straight time to a more swing style is becoming increasingly apparent. The brass lines are becoming more legato as the three melodic voices march toward a peak.
02:18 The gradual crescendo comes to an end with a dramatic shift in texture as sustained chords are played over subtle cymbal activity in the drums.
02:38 Brass reenter with legato chords and piano fills.
02:54 Saxophones enter with a countermelody.
03:10 Muted brass enter with soft punctuations.
03:42 Tenor saxophone soloist appears out of the ensemble texture. The solo continues with just the rhythm section supporting it.
04:30 Very soft sustained chords are played by various horns in the background. Notice the regular rhythm played by the background chords as well as the repeated motivic ideas presented by the soloist.
05:00 The soloist begins to pick up more energy with short double-time passages and excursions into the higher range of the saxophone. The basic format remains small group throughout.
05:44 The trombones enter playing the rhythmic chord pattern signaling the end of the solo.
05:59 Trumpets enter with an additional countermelody as the soloist increases the melodic energy.
06:14 Trumpets join the trombones on the rhythmic chordal riff.
06:28 The solo comes to a climax as it ends with a single ensemble chord.
06:30 Another shift in the rhythmic underpinning with a slight increase in tempo. This interlude again has a counterpoint between the melodic lines of the lower instruments, trombones and the trumpets. This sets up the next section.
06:48 The swing feel returns as the trombone solo begins. Notice the bass pattern under the solo that keeps repeating. The trombone slips into and out of a double-time feel.
07:20 Notice the repeated chords played briefly by the piano. They will return later and be picked up by the rest of the rhythm section.
07:38 The soloist explores motivic ideas here.
07:53 The rhythm section now picks up the rhythm played earlier by the piano. It then evaporates as quickly as it appeared.
08:00 Soft chords appear in the horns and become increasingly louder.
08:21 Trumpets join in as the solo continues to increase in energy and reaches its final peak.
08:28 A guitar soloist takes over. The punctuated chords in the back-ground step back some but again build to support the high-energy guitar solo.
09:04 The guitar is left completely alone on a dissonant chord. The band joins back in immediately as the solo continues and builds to another high point with a driving ensemble behind it.
09:35 The ensemble takes the lead again as the guitar solo ends. The ensemble quickly brings this section to a close.
09:41 The rhythm section is left with the repeating motive.
09:48 The rhythm stops suddenly leaving only two sustained ensemble chords. The composition ends with an alteration between the rhythm section motive and sustained chords until it finally fades out.
10:20 End.
